Is 8 to abolish a good starting point for educating someone on defunding/abolishing the police as well?

I would encourage folks to look at this history of policing in your own communities as you begin the researching police reform and or defunding and abolition.

8 to Abolition: 1) Defund the Police 2) Demilitarize Communities 3) Remove Police from Schools 4) Free People from Prison and Jails 5) Repeal Laws Criminalizing Survival 6) Invest in Community Self-Governance 7) Provide Safe Housing for Everyone 8) Invest in Care, Not Cops

I feel you, Clara. My father, uncle, brother (all black) are cops. It's hard. Practice deep listening and self-manage your triggers -- it might just help you move folx. Center yourself in the outcomes: do you want to be right or do you want to be effective? Build your muscle around coalition building which includes finding some common ground. Be responsive to what you know they'll respond to: if they need facts, do your research; if they are moved by media, share movies, documentaries, films, and articles y'all can engage with together; if you know they care for you, tell them how this causes you harm. And it's ok to create boundaries. Be disciplined in your approach.
